Insight

We sat down with newcomer Mat Parker to discuss his decision to join us, his background and experience, and what excites him most about the role. With a strong focus on building meaningful relationships and delivering impact, Matt shares how he’s looking to contribute to the team and support our continued growth and success.

Can you outline your role as a recruiter?

I support law firms with their Partner hires from London across EMEA and the US. My role is to help our law firm clients secure the strongest and most impactful hires into their partnership. This involves delivering to retained search and due diligence mandates across a range of jurisdictions whilst focusing on the US and Global Elite Law firms.

Why Investigo?

There were a few reasons for joining Investigo .. the clear opportunity lies in the size of the internal market place, the range of support and tech available but still having a huge amount of space to continue to build our market presence in Legal. Doing this at a global fast growth powerhouse that has huge ambitions will also be a lot of fun.

What types of roles/ specific areas or industries do you find yourself recruiting for?

Legal is such a huge industry and whilst I have delivered to a range of practice areas from Employment to Funds Structuring my dedicated areas are in lawyers practicing in the Private Equity / Private Capital space and all areas related to the Digital world such as Technology Transactions, Outsourcing and Data. I have always had a international coverage to my role, which gives me an opportunity to travel but I focus mostly  focus mostly on our brilliant home market of London. Our Due Diligence service is truly global and can find us working anywhere in the world.

Can you share a success story where you helped a candidate land a role that was a perfect fit for them?

I was fortunate enough to win a mandate from an Elite US Law firm looking to hire a rising star Private Equity Transactions partner for their German office. This was a great chance to utilise my German language skills. The client had a very clear brief and the candidate equally had clear thoughts on what the ideal moved looked like as they were already at one of the most prestigious US firms in their market. After a process which covered a range of different interviews, meeting around 30 partners they were successful and have been winning awards and recognised for their deals across the legal press. Happy client and candidate which lead to another instruction! I also was lucky enough to lead a placement which resulted in a UK law firm opening their first office abroad in Dublin. This started as a 2 partner team and has now become an office of over 25 lawyers, not bad. Here is a curated list of deals I have delivered:

Representative experience:

•    Elite US Law Firm – Private Equity Partner, Frankfurt.
•    UK Global Law Firm - Funds Structuring Partner, Dublin
•    UK Law Firm – Head of International Arbitration, London
•    Elite US law firm – Data Protection lead for Europe, Frankfurt.
•    Big 4 – Commercial Technology and Digital Partner, London.

Due Diligence Projects:

•    Technology Partner, Helsinki
•    Energy Partner, Germany
•    Private Equity and M&A Partner, Sydney
•    M&A and Energy Partner, Madrid
•    Capital Markets Partner, Warsaw

How do you see the future of recruitment evolving in the next few years?

In my space its not about volume but about curation. Thankfully knowledge and experience are very much valued by our clients and candidates in the legal space. Recruiters who can combine this with the evolving plethora of technology tools on offer have the opportunity to separate themselves from the bunch and really move the market.

How do you stay current with industry trends and recruitment best practices?

This is a market that is easy to get passionate about. The impact our placements have on our clients is significant and often make the press. Thankfully the legal press is really competitive now with many reporters which makes it easier to stay informed with outlets such as The Lawyer, Law.com, Juve and Law Middle East all covering the market. However, the really valuable information comes from your network of clients and candidates. This allows you to be ahead of the press but also have a deeper understanding of the context or stories behind the move, the motivations or push/pull factors that supported the decisions. We also have access to market leading tools such as Pitchbook which allows us to truly understand who works and how often!
